jonathan franzen
ok, so when a book includes bad reviews on the cover, you know that the author must be either self-confident or blissfully oblivious to critics.....this from jossip.com...The Discomfort Zone, Jonathan Franzen’s book of essays, is out in paperback. And what better way to promote it than with an ad that connotes Franzen’s own warm spirit?
The magazine spot includes some choice words from Michiko Kakutani, who called the book, “Odious…incredibly annoying” in the Times and Daniel Mendelsohn, who described it as “perverse” in the Times Book Review
Obviously, the ad folks for Farrar, Straus & Girous have tapped into th psyche of Franzen’s fan base. They’re a self-hating bunch, who alternate between thinking their lives are failures and believing no one understands their true genius. Nothing could appeal to them more than condemnation from the Times.
