colette
ok, so mm reaches for her colette shelf when she is tired, frustrated, and in need of familiar literature............tonight i reread gigi, a short story made famous by hollywood, maurice chevalier (thank heavens for little girls......) and audrey hepburn.........reading it as a short story reminds me of how little it takes for hollywood to make a bit of dialogue into a major motion picture..............and after seeing cold mountain, it is difficult to see the connection between this short story and a major motion picture of any depth....................even if it took place in paris...............will cold mountain be the new barometer of substance, worth, etc.?????????and this after 3 years of lotr releases???????????????too much cinematic genius in too little time......................but back to madame colette.....her short story is spare on length, but rich in substance, detail, and believability...............and it lacks gory battle scenes............ maybe i will reread my entire colette shelf...and will feel a little better about the world than i do at this very moment..............
