frist filibuster at princeton #5
ok, so i have become obsessed with the princeton university student-led filibuster in front of frist hall.....the $25 million dollar building/retro-fit funded by a generous gift from the family of bill frist '74...he who desires to end forever the senatorial tradition of filibuster.......how absolutely perfect a protest.......a grass-roots, nonviolent statement in the singular location where it would matter the most....in front of the senator's own namesake building.....and these stalwart students have been going at it for nearly 7 days now......days and nights......despite apathy from busy undergrads, harassment from drunken classmates (saturday was an annual party day).....and legalistic objections from those who would require a reservation for the use of the space in advance of the desired protest......ha!.....as if a heart-felt stand against the tyranny of the majority could be penciled into the schedule book........i live far far away from princeton's idyllic campus........and i only happened upon the early hours of the filibuster because i read the daily princetonian online......a bit prematurely, as my middle child will not start his freshman year at this prestigious campus until fall......but mother's have the right to keep up with the little details that involve their children......especially when it comes to politics......i remember clearly the may 1970 riots on ohio college campuses....the burning of the rotc building at kent state...the killing of the 4 un-armed students by battle-prepared soldiers......they were protesting america's continued involvement in the vietnam war......and things got out of hand....... today, as i checked in on the filibuster webcam i chanced to see a father with a baby in a front-riding carrier, reading from a book into the microphone.....and i was moved to tears.........when a protest is so righteous that one can bring one's children.....then this is really the america that my forebearers dreamed about when they came to these shores......this is surely an academic environment where my child will thrive both philosophically and intellectually and such an example to the protesters of the future....that the civil disobedience offered by by thoreau....and the nonviolent show of position revered by dr, martin luther king and ghandi......that there is still a place in this life for such disagreement amongst patriotic countrymen.......i think woody allen described the sentiment best...when he referred to himself as the loyal opposition.......i believe that these filibustering students are but the voice of the loyal opposition......reminding those in power that the tables may turn......at any time......and that today's ruling majority just may become the loyal opposition at a date yet to be revealed.......... oh yes,…this I believe with all my heart…….
