snakes.............

ok, so today was a gardening day at rose hill cottage (not my name.....my mother had a lovely sign painted years ago on a slate, and it still hangs where she put it on my porch).....i have filled part of my numerous planting pots with my mother's day flats of annuals........i fill pots with annuals because my big planting beds contain mature growth of perennials.....which need weeding and taming, but have no room for annuals........the pots sit at interesting junctions of corners, porches, steps....etc.......some still have a few perennials in them that survived the mild winter.........so i have chosen red slavia for height, yellow marigolds, and varigated snapdragons for interest, and white petunias to drape.........i carried many of these pots out of miss lulu's cabin....the cabin that retains the same features as our front room...yet remains a cabin.....gentle readers....i live in a house that has evolved systematically from a cabin built to house workers when the dam was built...the dam that created the lake....in 1928....or so says the date above the nonworking fireplace in the front room...which retains the beams of the cabin....the thick plastered walls hide the logs.......anyway.....miss lulu's cabin is in our yard, but was at one time a separate property, willed to grandpa ernst's 3rd wife by miss lulu herself.......i hear from people occassionally who remember drinking and playing cards in that building......we use it for storage........summer furniture mostly........and the snakes and raccoons also use it as a wintering hole........i have a hard time going in at all on warm days, because that is when we are most likely to see snakes sunning bewteen the logs.....like a snake hotel....today i only saw one snake, beneath constance spry.....the lovely english rose that may be in the path of the yet-to-be-built septic system.......it was probably harmless....but you never know...........one could say that snake is a good sign of a healthy ecosystem........maybe i could sell them to churches that handle such things.......there ar several in this area......frankly i think that is foolishness, no matter what 'the bible says'.......the bible warns against gluttony, and that seems to stop none of these crazy christian types..............
