the 'e' word.......

ok, so my church is focusing on it's past for the next few months...so that it can go more boldly into the future....and the details of our founding have finally been uttered during this morning's service......past recollections have allowed emphasized the march out of 1st Baptist by the 400 or so souls that opted to leave and start out on their own.....but the issues that prompted the split have always been murky at best......and heard from other than church members.....seems that a new minister hired in 1925 was a bit too progressive for some....and amongst the charges leveled against him was that he was an evolutionist.......a ph.d.-prepared archivist who has studied the 'evolution' of baptists in ky spoke to us this morning briefly, in hushed tones....about how the schism became so ugly that one might not have known that the parties involved were christian.....and that charter members of labc vowed never to speak of it again.......i blogged once about a centre student who did extensive study of our two churches for a religion project....and that said student actually tracked the path of both churches from that split to the present.....and noted that at some point labc became a progressive congregation that embraced female involvement let alone evolution, and the 1st baptist folks ended up as the more conservative group, one that kicks out families that serve champagne at weddings and likely clings to the adam and eve story.....so now the evolution card has been played, without gasps......and hopefully we can all move on......
