nabokov......

ok,so i have read most of lolita........and i have very mixed emotions about it........partly because i have a daughter aged 12...but mostly because i have a friend who is divorcing her husband because he acted out similar impulses.......and unlike h.h....this guy has yet to die of a heart attack in jail.......of course....i must admit that the notion that old men should mate with underage females is not new........it is quite the accepted norm in societies that want bloodlines to be unwavering......marry off girls before the age of menarche....and there is no question of who fathered who(m)........but we as a society got over the marrying off of 12,13, and 14 year olds....or it would seem in every locale except eastern ky....and most reasonable people now expect girls to say no until they are married and at least 18....or thereabouts.......and thus we have lolita....who is devilishly provacative to h.h......which makes me queasy given the m. jackson trial.......where we are prepared to put away adult males who dabble with juvenile boys.....whereas we have traditionally overlooked marriage to juvenile girls......though there is essentially no difference in essentials...is it only pedophilia when it is the same gender.....dizzying.........and is it only h.h.'s fault...because he sought it out.......or is it a shared fault....because lolita...well.......didn't know that her actions would such devastating consequences.......and yet nabokov's prose is so flowing......so much like conversation that i may have thought in my head from time to time.....this is scary....not that i have desired underage anybodies......but because that i may have shared stray and random thoughts with someone who is so clearly obsessed with something he cannot have.......and if this tale were autobiographical...it would explain why nabokov dropped out and moved to switzerland and didn't write again.........omg......such a book must be finished......but not this evening........
