ok, so.....i can remember another time a pope came to washington dc.....i had just finished graduate school (1980), and a dental intern and i drove to d.c. to see the sights....we slept on the floor at my old high school boyfriend's apartment....and his new girlfriend (being catholic) had recently dragged him downtown to see the pope.....and people were selling popes-on-a-stick.....and i regret not asking at the time exactly what that gift-item actually looked like.....must have been the template for bobble-head pope.....those who keep track of these things may recall that this same dental intern was a rabid u of l fan....and we spent a lot of time in d.c. in sports bars watching u of l play on the 'big screens'......big for 1980.....u of l did come through that year, by the way.......and i recall that aspect of the trip with much more clarity than i remember the pope being in town.....
