andre agassi

ok, so although i watched parts of the england/portugal soccer match....and the nymets beating the nyyankees....and followed the tour prologue on-line......it was andre agassi's last wimbledon match that brought me to tears.....hard to imagine a sport so brutal that talented and fiercely competetive 36-year-olds are washed up......i recall fondly watching andre (with hair....) beating john mcenroe at wimbledon on the day that mac retired.......and so it was poignant that mac called andre's last grass-court match......and pulled no punches....mostly talked about how he thought andre would put up much more of a fight......but then...andre is married with young children......and has acknowledged that the sport he loves takes a lot from his family life........well, that and the young bucks are all 20 or less and have nothing better to do than to practice......one of these days i would like to view a mathc or two at centre court in wimbledon.......just to breathe in the aura of gentile sport at its best......one of these days.......but for this day, it did bring tears to my eyes to see the crowd applaud andre's retirement so very warmly.......
